Doppl: Redefining Virtual Try-On through Generative AI

Doppl is an experimental app from Google Labs to help users visualize how any outfit might look on them. By creating a digital, animated version of themselves, users can explore their personal style with a new level of confidence and playfulness.

Online fashion shopping often suffers from a "confidence gap"—the inability to know how a garment will truly look and move on one's own body. Doppl bridges this gap by leveraging generative AI techniques to transform a simple screenshot of a garment into a high-fidelity virtual try-on experience.

Project Brief:

In a collaboration with the cross-functional team, our goal was to empower users to visualize any outfit on their own digital twin, transforming static online shopping into an interactive and personalized journey of style discovery.

My Role & Strategic Impact

As the Senior UX Designer on this lean, fast-moving team, I worked at the intersection of product strategy, motion, and visual identity. My role was defined by leading the foundational "0-to-1" thinking and bridging technical innovation with human-centric design:

Product Strategy & Systemic Design (0 to 1): I spearheaded the end-to-end product thinking, conceptualizing the vision to transition the project from a technical research concept into a cohesive 0-to-1 experience. Alongside product leads, I was responsible for creating the strategic pitch deck used to secure buy-in from senior executives, effectively summarizing the core user experience and value proposition to ensure project support. I defined the Critical User Journeys (CUJs) to ensure that our generative AI capabilities remained anchored in functional, human-centric fashion needs, while co-leading the development of a foundational design system with our Art Director to establish a premium, scalable visual language.

Overcoming Onboarding Friction:

To solve the challenge of high drop-off rates during photo uploads, I led the creation of a diverse system of virtual avatars. This allowed users to experience the "magic" of the app instantly by selecting a representative body type, significantly increasing early engagement.

Defining the Pose Library for Confidence & Sharing:

In close partnership with the Product and UXR leads, I co-defined a library of motion and poses—including 180-degree turns and natural stances—grounded in user research to provide the visual clarity needed for purchasing confidence. This collaborative effort focused on making the experience "share-worthy," empowering users to capture their virtual try-ons and share them with their social circles.
